The Leeds United defenders know they need to hit the ground running to impress their new boss.

Leeds United duo Lewie Coyle and Liam Cooper have been captured on video being put through their paces ahead of a return to pre-season training.

The two defenders will know they face a huge summer at Elland Road, with new manager Thomas Christiansen likely to make some key decisions once he has seen his players in action.

Cooper may have struggled for regular game time last season, but Kyle Bartley’s return to parent club Swansea City means the former has a real chance to form a long-term partnership with Pontus Jansson in the heart of Leeds’ defence.

Some Whites supporters feel the 25-year-old is not up to the job, however he at least deserves a chance to prove his worth to Christiansen.

Coyle faces a tougher task for regular game time, with Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

That said, the latter could be used predominantly on the left next season, especially with Charlie Taylor set to move on, and Coyle could be the back-up option when Ayling is rested or unavailable.

Christiansen is expected to make plenty of additions to the playing squad, with a new centre-back, an additional central midfielder and another striker surely high on his wish list. Yet for now it is up to the players he has inherited to prove their worth.

Coyle and Cooper are starting early, and it could make all the difference when the new campaign kicks off later this summer.
