The Whites winger picked up where he left off last season under Marcelo Bielsa by helping the Elland Road side to victory in their opener.

Leeds United winger Pablo Hernandez is the best player in the Championship, Elland Road ex-player Andy Couzens has told Love Sport Radio.

The 34-year-old Spaniard was impressive for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season and very much hit the ground running this term as he starred in the Whites’ 3-1 victory over Bristol City in their Championship opener.

In the first half, Hernandez picked the ball up on the edge of the box, swivelled and sent a left-footed shot into the top corner of Daniel Bentley’s net, while after the interval, he took the ball around a Robins defender inside the box and clipped a cross for Patrick Bamford to head home.

“I think he’s the best player in the Championship,” Couzens told Johnny Burrow and Martin Allen on Love Sport Radio. “He’s 34 I think now, and age is only a number to Pablo.

“He’s integral to what we do as a team and how we play and the creative side of things. But we’ve also got to recognise the work of Bamford up top and the lads in midfield – it gives Pablo that little bit of freedom. He is a massive part of this team.”

Hernandez was an indispensable member of Bielsa’s side last season, weighing in with 12 goals and 12 assists – according to Transfermarkt – as Leeds came ever so close to promotion from the Championship.

He joined Leeds initially on a six-month loan from Qatari club Al-Arabi in August 2016 and has impressed so much for the Elland Road side over the years that he is now on a contract until 2020 (Transfermarkt).
