Leeds United’s marquee signing of the summer transfer window was a £25 million deal for Daniel James.

The Wales international was perilously close to joining Leeds a couple of years earlier but Swansea City wound up pulling the plug.

James ultimately signed for Manchester United and although the Whites have him now, he isn’t proving worth the wait at this moment in time.

The 23-year-old attacker is yet to score or set up a goal in eight Premier League games this season.

In fact, he has only created one big chance for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who have won just once from nine league outings so far.

Wrong man?

James’s form makes you wonder if Leeds should’ve renewed interest in Demarai Gray instead of breaking the bank on the Welshman.

The Elland Road club wanted Gray in January of this year [The Mirror, 05/01, page 47] and he wound up joining Everton this past summer.

But here’s the thing that’ll annoy Bielsa and Victor Orta – he joined the Toffees for a bargain £1.6 million and has just scored his third Premier League goal of the season on Saturday.

Gray, who also has two assists, is having a much better season than James in terms of numbers.

And although the Leeds man is certainly capable of turning it around, the evidence so far suggests that the Whites might’ve been better off going back for the former Leicester City winger.
