Leeds United reportedly wanted to sign Josh Windass last year – now he will play against them in Friday’s Championship clash with Wigan Athletic.
Josh Windass is expected to line up for Wigan Athletic when they face off against Leeds United on Good Friday. But the midfielder could have been starting for Marcelo Bielsa’s side instead, if it wasn’t for something of a sliding doors moment in January 2018.
According to the Daily Record, Leeds were preparing to pay more than £500,000 for the then-Rangers star with Windass emerging as a top target for the Championship outfit during the final few weeks of Thomas Christiansen’s reign.
But a few weeks later Christiansen was sacked and Windass remained at Ibrox.
Fast forward to August, however, and the 25-year-old made the belated switch to England, joining Wigan for a fee of £2.5 million (Scottish Sun).
Though he is yet to live up to that hefty price-tag, finding the net just five times for The Latics after scoring 18 goals in his final season at Ibrox.
He is still one of the most dangerous attacking weapons available to Paul Cook, however, with his penchant for accurate strikes from distance a potential worry for a Leeds side who have conceded a number of goals from outside the box this season.
With the sweet smell of promotion wafting through the air at Elland Road, Leeds will be praying that Windass doesn’t make them pay 14 months on.
