Leeds United have been known for making some interesting bizarre appointments over the years, with the likes of David Hockaday and Darko Milanic springing to mind. However, Harry Redknapp could be an even stranger choice for the club.
According to The Mirror, Redknapp has signaled that he would be open to taking the Leeds job, and if he is offered the role, this would be one of the strangest appointments we’ve seen in years.
Redknapp has been out of the managerial game for six years, and his last stint at Birmingham City almost resulted in their relegation to League One. Since then, he has become more of a celebrity than a football manager, appearing on reality TV shows and advertising a number of products.
At the age of 75, Redknapp would certainly be an unusual choice to try and save Leeds from relegation. While he undoubtedly knows football well, the game has moved on a lot in the past decade, and it’s questionable whether he would be able to adapt to the modern game.
Of course, Redknapp’s appointment would be a gamble, and there’s always the possibility that he could surprise everyone and guide Leeds to safety. But given his recent record and the fact that he seems to have moved away from football in recent years, it’s hard to see how he would be the right man for the job.
Leeds need a manager who can motivate and inspire the players, and who has a clear vision for how the team should play. Redknapp probably hasn’t thought about football tactics in depth for half a decade, and not to be crude, would a Premier League squad really respect someone who was last seen on TV eating fish eyes and a variety of insects in the jungle?
While Redknapp may be an iconic figure in English football, he would be a strange choice to lead Leeds United. The club needs a manager with a modern approach, who knows how to navigate the Premier League in the year 2023, and Redknapp, sadly, just isn’t that man anymore.
