Leeds ‘concerned’ Chelsea are about to hijack deal to sign £42m attacker

Leeds United are reportedly worried that Chelsea could make a move to sign Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha, with the Whites firmly in the race to land the Brazilian international.

According to the Evening Standard, Leeds are now ‘concerned’ that their Premier League rivals could hijack their approach to sign Cunha, with the 23-year-old expected to leave Atletico in January as interest from English sides continues to increase.

As per the report, Wolves had been leading the chase to sign Cunha, however the Molineux side have since struggled to finalise the deal with Atletico to bring the striker to the West Midlands, with Chelsea now potentially looking at the forward as an option in January.

Graham Potter’s side are expected to sign a striker next month following the news earlier this week that Armando Broja will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury, with the Evening Standard stating that Chelsea are not willing to bring forward their agreement to sign Christopher Nkunku.

As a result, Cunha has now emerged as a potential target for Chelsea, a situation that will come as a blow for Leeds as Jesse Marsch’s side are also keen on signing the Atheltic outcast, who TalkSport report could be available for as much as £42m.

Indeed, Chelsea signing Cunha would be a massive blow for Leeds given how much of a better fit the Yorkshire side would be for the Brazilian, with the Atletico forward at risk of becoming a bench player in west London should the Blues progress with an approach for the youngster.

Cunha should be aware of the classic pitfuls of signing for Chelsea

Chelsea’s need for a striker will likely see Potter’s side push hard in January for an attacker, yet for Cunha, the Brazilian will have to be aware that there’s every chance that his career will fail to get off the ground as it already has done at Atletico.

As we know, Chelsea already have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and will have Nkunku arriving in the summer, and for Cunha, this means that there is a strong probability that the Brazilian will be second or even third-choice at the Blues come the off-season, something that won’t happen if the forward is to sign for Leeds.
