Leeds United have snapped up Carlisle United winger Liam McCarron.
Leeds United enjoyed a busy Monday, announcing three signings to bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s squad – though one looks to be for the Under-23’s to begin with.
Winger Jack Harrison has returned to the club for another year after spending last season on loan at Elland Road, and Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White has joined him on loan for the campaign.
The only permanent addition yesterday was winger Liam McCarron, who has signed from Carlisle United on a three-year deal, with the fee undisclosed.
The 18-year-old has come up through the Carlisle ranks, and having featured in 20 League Two games last season, he’s now jumped up to the Championship with Leeds.
McCarron will initially join Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side, but he looks to be an exciting prospect for the future, and Bielsa won’t have any qualms about throwing him into the first team is he’s ready.
McCarron was far from the highest-profile addition on Monday, but when Leeds announced the deal, they included an interesting line in the statement, claiming ‘Leeds have beaten off competition from a number of Premier League and Championship clubs to secure the signature of the highly rated youngster.’
Leeds naturally didn’t name the clubs involved, but they may well have been talking about Wolves, Derby County and even local rivals Sheffield United, with all three interested in McCarron according to the Daily Mail.
Beating Wolves – which may well be the case – would be a big win for Leeds, as they can offer a path to European football as things stand, and they are the most ambitious of the clubs allegedly keen.
That makes the teenager something of a coup for Leeds, convincing him to reject Premier League interest in favour of a move to Elland Road, and he’ll be hoping his decision pays off in the coming years.
