Jimiel Chikukwa is “delighted” to have been snapped up by Watford following his departure from Premier League rivals Leeds United, as reported by the Hornets’ website.
And talk about an instant impact.
The 18-year-old had enjoyed a brief spell on trial at the Hertfordshire club and wasted little time in making his present felt, scoring in U23 clashes with Hull City and Crewe Alexandra.
So it should come as no surprise to learn Watford have jumped at the chance to tie Chikukwa down, although the club’s official website has opted not to reveal the length or details of the contract.
Former Leeds starlet Chikukwa now has a chance to make his name at Watford
“I’m delighted. I’ve had to be really patient over the summer to get this done but I’m just buzzing it’s happened now,” Chikukwa explains a few months after being let go by Leeds.
“I was out of contract and looking for a club – and I got the opportunity to come down to Watford.
“I’m willing to take any opportunity that comes in football because I love it, and I’m delighted the decision has paid off.
“I’ve settled in quite well, I’m enjoying it. It’s quite far from home but all of the lads have made me feel welcome.

“I’d say I like to run in behind,” he continued. “I’m one of those types of strikers but also I’m a bit of a poacher, so those balls in and around the six-yard box I’m usually there.
“I’m pacey, I like to get on the ball and show what I can do, I can beat a man.”
It’s not certain why Chikukwa wasn’t retained by a Leeds side boasting one of the most exciting academies in English football.
Perhaps there was simply too much competition at Thorpe Arch with the likes of Crysencio Summerville, who made his Premier League debut in last Friday’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, ahead of him in the pecking order.
Chikukwa produced five goals in 16 games for Leeds’ youth sides during the 2020/21 campaign.
