Leeds United should give Jay Roy Grot more than one year.
Young striker Jay-Roy Grot signed for Leeds last summer in an unenviable situation but with a big reputation.
Hailed as top overseas talent, he was bought immediately after the sale of Chris Wood, and while he was not expected to single handedly replace the 2016/17 top scorer, he was thought to be capable of playing a first team role.
Instead Grot did not look ready, and only looked comfortable when down in the under-23s.
It would be a surprise if Marcelo Bielsa decides he is ready for a role in 2018/19.
But when the Argentine delivers his instructions for Grot’s departure, Leeds chief Victor Orta must show some conviction.
Grot clearly was not ready, but he has attributes like strength and power which a top striker should have.
Orta signed Grot for a reason, and he is still just 20-years-old.
The only thing worse than keeping Grot and seeing him fail, would be to sell him and see him succeed.
After just one season, it is still too early for Leeds to write the Dutch youth international off for good.
Leeds must send him out on loan instead of selling him, and then make an assessment on him in pre-season in 2019 or even midway through the 2019/20 season.
