Lewie Coyle and Alex Mowatt are both out of contract next summer.

Leeds United chief executive Ben Mansford has told BBC Radio Leeds that he is in talks with the agents of Lewie Coyle and Alex Mowatt over extending their contracts.

Leeds have seen a number of youth products thrive in recent years, with Sam Byram and Lewis Cook earning moves to Premier League sides West Ham United and Bournemouth respectively, whilst Charlie Taylor, Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira are all part of Garry Monk’s first-team setup.

The future looks bright for those three players, and the situation surrounding Taylor’s contract – which expires next summer – is a concern, and two other homegrown talents are out of contract in 2017 too.

Right back Lewie Coyle and midfielder Alex Mowatt are both out of contract at the end of the season, and could choose to leave Elland Road despite each spending more than ten years with the club.

Coyle, who made his debut under Steve Evans last season, is behind Luke Ayling and Gaetano Berardi in the pecking order at right back, whilst midfielder Mowatt has started just three Championship games this season.

Now, Leeds chief executive Ben Mansford has spoken to BBC Radio Leeds about the situation surrounding both players as fans want to know whether the duo will be staying.

Mansford claims that Leeds are talking to the agents of both players, but acknowledged that the club are protected from losing them for nothing as they are both under the age of 24.

Mansford added that both players will want to play more first-team football than they have so far this season, and hopes to have positive news on Coyle and Mowatt’s contracts in the near future.

“We’re in conversations with both agents, and that will continue,” said Mansford. “They’re both under 24 in terms of the club being protected, and I think there will be a right time for both parties to get it done.”

“We’re in contact with Lewie’s representatives and Alex’s representatives…both probably want to play more football than they have, but both are fantastic young men who have come through the academy and want to see the club do well. We’ll do what we can at the right time, and I’d like to have the most positive news as we can at the earliest opportunity, but those thinks take time,” he added.
