Leeds United defender Charlie Taylor’s contract saga drags on with no sign of resolution, and it now emerges he could be targeting a move to Liverpool.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has reported Taylor’s representatives are hopeful the Reds will make a move for the left-back.

As far as Liverpool are concerned, this should be an exciting development, with the club short of defensive options.

Left-back has been a problem position for more than a year, with Alberto Moreno’s defensive shortcomings exposed on several occasions.

Taylor will not come for free, with Leeds owed compensation by tribunal, but it would be a surprise if the figure reached £10 million.

Anything below this will represent a real bargain for Liverpool, who would normally have to pay at least that for a top level left-back.

Taylor’s performances in the Championship have been consistently strong over the past three seasons, and he is a more well rounded player than Sam Byram who switched to West Ham just over a year ago.

The 23-year-old has shown the right temperament so far to suggest he could be a Premier League success, and impressed in the EFL Cup against Liverpool earlier this season.

Liverpool’s deficiencies have been shown up during the last two months, both defensively, with a lack of leaders in midfield, and no prolific striker, while Simon Mignolet is far from a long-term option in goal.

It is going to take substantial investment for the Reds to address all of these, while makes a cut price move for Taylor obvious.

He is not the cheap option, but the smart option, and considering his reported desire to play for the Reds, it could be a simple deal to clinch.
