Liam Cooper was reported as saying Leeds never recovered from the loss to Millwall in September.
Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has retaliated on Twitter after Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay claims he said that the squad had not recovered from September’s loss to Millwall.
The 26-year-old did not feature in the 1-0 loss at the start of the season after suffering an injury prior to the defeat during Leeds’ 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Elland Road.
Cooper was on press duty on Friday afternoon, talking to the media ahead of Sunday’s clash against QPR at Elland Road in what is the Whites’ last Championship fixture of the season.
Hay reported that former Chesterfield defender Cooper had said that Leeds had not fully recovered from the loss to Neil Harris’ side, with the rivalry between Leeds and Millwall most fearsome.
Cooper received backlash on Twitter from disgruntled Leeds fans, with many criticising the defender’s claim that the club failed to recover from a 1-0 loss away from home.
However, Cooper fought back on Twitter by messaging Hay in the public domain, saying that he did not say what Hay had Tweeted. He went on to say that after the 1-0 loss, Championship sides worked out a way to cope with Leeds.
Cooper is expected to start on Sunday after seeing out the full 90 minutes of Leeds’ 2-1 loss to Norwich City last time out, in which he partnered Pontus Jansson. Paudie O’Connor missed out, and could be overlooked by Paul Heckingbottom once again.
