Leeds are lacking in depth at centre-back and have previously been linked with Lindsay.

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay ahead of the summer transfer window – but Leeds United cannot let their Championship rivals move for the colossal centre-back.

The Sun on Sunday claimed in their paper edition on February 24 (page 64) that Villa want to sign the 23-year-old rock Lindsay and are monitoring the former Partick Thistle defender’s situation.

He is likely to cost £2.5million in the summer, if Barnsley gain promotion back to the Championship from League One. The south Yorkshire club currently sit in second place in the third tier, but Sunderland are closing in on the top two.

He has made 30 appearances for the Tykes in League One this season, helping Barnsley keep 15 clean sheets. In the three league games he has not played, Barnsley have failed to keep a clean sheet.

His displays have caught the attention of Dean Smith and Villa, who could be in the market for a new central defender in the summer with Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause only on loan. Tommy Elphick’s contract expires this summer.

Leeds are in a similar position. The Whites are lacking in options at the heart of their defence, though Marcelo Bielsa has opted against bringing new central defenders to the club in the past two windows.

Though Premier League promotion is on the horizon and better options may become available, Lindsay would certainly be a shrewd addition given that he is young and has enormous scope to improve – especially under Bielsa.

Leeds have been linked with the young Scot in the past, with the Daily Record claiming that Leeds were rivalling Barnsley to land Lindsay from Partick way back in December 2016.

Now, they should seriously consider reigniting their interest in the impressive, up-and-coming defender to add depth to both Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson – as well as thinking for the future, Championship or Premier League.
