Leeds made two bids for Aaronson during the January window, but Red Bull Salzburg flat-out refused to sell the American.
Knowing they had a key Champions League matchup with Bayern Munich, Salzburg were reluctant to let any key players go.
That meant Karim Adeyemi, Noah Okafor and Aaronson all had to stay put with the Austrian champions.
On Wednesday night, Salzburg hosted Bayern in the first leg of their last 16 clash.
Leeds will have been watching Aaronson closely, and he played a vital part in the opening goal.
Adeyemi fed Aaronson on the edge of the box, with Aaronson managing to find Junior Adamu who curled a beauty into the net.
Aaronson then went close with quick feet and a fine left-footed striker, but Salzburg were made to pay for not finding that second goal as Kingsley Coman bagged a late leveller.
The Athletic believe Leeds will return with a new bid for Aaronson this summer and the playmaker is keen to join the Whites.
Yet if he continues to turn in quality performances, you can absolutely see a number of other clubs joining the race.
Leeds will hope that Aaronson does end up at Elland Road, and the 21-year-old has been praised on social media.
Former US international striker and current pundit Taylor Twellman took to Twitter to hail Aaronson.
Twellman suggested that Aaronson made the right move by picking Red Bull Salzburg after shining for Philadelphia Union.
Twellman added that Aaronson is now ‘destined to make a bigger move’ – and that could well be Leeds United.
