Leeds boss Monk must resist temptation over £5m-plus rated available Swansea winger

Leeds United should not invest an unusually high amount into available winger Modou Barrow.

Leeds United boss Garry Monk has profited from a lack of direction at his old club Swansea in recent months, managing to sign key figure Kyle Bartley on loan.

With potential big transfer backing from new Italian investor Andrea Radrizzani, bigger spending could be around the corner this month.

So Monk’s attention could be piqued by reports former Swansea winger Modou Barrow is to be made available by his old side, with SkySports reporting they are hoping to sell him for upwards of £5 million this coming month.

Leeds are low in terms of numbers with regards to wingers, with Stuart Dallas and Hadi Sacko (on loan) main options with Kemar Roofe also able to play wide.

Barrow could improve their options, but is not worth the investment at £5 million.

For context Leeds’ record fee over the past decade is £3 million, spent on Chris Wood and Kemar Roofe in consecutive summers.

Radrizzani’s cash could give them more to operate with, while a potential sale of Charlie Taylor could also boost their coffers.

Leeds will be tempted to spend in order to supplement their promotion push, and Barrow is a big admirer of Monk, bemoaning his sacking at Swansea in quotes to Wales Online earlier this year.

Barrow though is not the right player to make a rare investment on.

This season he has been unable to make an impact for Swansea, with no goals and just two assists in 18 appearances, 12 of which have been starts.

Previous seasons have seen Barrow take loan spells at Blackburn and Nottingham Forest in the Championship, and fail to score or shine at either club. Pressure from the big fee will not help him either.

Leeds need a big addition to take them to the next level and the right player is worth paying for, but Swansea’s valuation of their Gambian winger is too high and Monk must resist temptation to bring him aboard.
