Leeds United were too good for Derby County last night.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa addressed the media after his side’s fine 2-0 win over Derby at Elland Road last night and shared what Frank Lampard told him when he phoned the Rams boss to explain who was behind the spygate saga, as quoted by Leeds Live.

The build up to last night’s game was overshadowed by the Whites sending someone to spy on the Rams’ pre-game preparations – something that was confirmed by Bielsa in his pre-match interview.

Leeds eventually proved to be far too good for Derby, arguably producing their best display yet under Bielsa’s reign in west Yorkshire.

The Argentine admitted that he sent a club employee to spy on Derby’s pre-match preparations, and he told reporters the response that Lampard gave him when he called him to explain the situation, as quoted by Leeds Live:

Marcelo Bielsa manager of Leeds United greets fans as he arrives at the stadium prior to the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Hull City at Elland Road on December 29,...

“He told me I violated the fair play rules and I said anything you do regarding this, I would understand it. I would accept it as legitimate. I didn’t call him to apologise. I called him to tell him I was responsible for the situation and the facts actually happened. And he was direct in his answer and I respect that. He said you violated the fair play rules.”

Leeds now sit five points clear at the top of the Championship table, but they will be anxiously waiting to hear whether there will be any repercussions for their part in spy-gate.

Ironically for the Whites, beating Derby last night might just dictate how the east Midlands outfit now pursue the matter.
