Leeds United have been quite simply magnificent this season.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa addressed the media in the aftermath of his side’s hard-earned victory over Rotherham United at Elland Road yesterday, and dropped a hint that he actually wanted his team to be more direct than they were, as quoted by Leeds Live.

The Argentine is well-renowned for his penchant of attacking, free-flowing football, with the emphasis being placed on his side’s playing out from the back.

The Whites seemed rather laboured against the Millers, however, and Bielsa told reporters how he actually would have liked his team to abandon their usual patient build-up play, in favour of a more direct approach, as quoted by Leeds Live:

“We built too much from the back. We built on a lateral way, not on a vertical one. It was not easy for us to go from a defensive position to an offensive one.”

That was obviously a message that he gave his players during the half-time break, considering the manner in which Leeds came out all guns blazing for the second-half.

The west Yorkshire outfit had far more variation to their play, and were not as predictable to play against.

The ability to do just that will surely prove to be vital to Leeds’ hopes of earning promotion back to the Premier League this season, and Bielsa deserves great credit for already showing signs that he is willing to adapt his preferred playing style in order to succeed in the Championship.
