Leeds United won against Barnsley in the Championship last weekend.

Leeds Manager Paul Heckingbottom looks on prior to the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Leeds United at Villa Park on April 13, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

Leeds United head coach Paul Heckingbottom has told Leeds Live that Samuel Saiz understands why he was taken off against Barnsley last weekend.

Saiz, who can operate as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, started the Championship game against Barnsley at Elland Road last weekend.

The Spaniard was taken off in the 84th minute, as Leeds got the better of their Yorkshire rivals 2-1 to return to winning ways.

The 27-year-old was not happy at coming off and made his frustrations abundantly clear, but Leeds head coach Heckingbottom has said that Saiz – who joined the Whites from Huesca in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post to be worth £3 million – understands why he was taken off.

Heckingbottom told Leeds Live about Saiz: “He knows it was tactical coming off. You’ve got a team pushing who are playing really direct so bypassing his role and at that moment in time they didn’t really have a shape, just playing really direct, lots of bodies round the ‘keeper so we needed to be strong in that area where the balls were dripping and it was really important role that Adam had when he went on there.

“And he can keep the ball for us. So yeah, it was really tactical and he knows that, so he wasn’t brought off because he was poor or anything like that.”

No further problem

It seems that the issue with Saiz and his frustration at being substituted has been dealt with.

One can understand why the Spaniard was frustrated, and it shows that he cares about playing well and is serious about the impact he makes.

The 27-year-old will be looking to play well for Leeds against Norwich City away from home at Carrow Road in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.
