Leeds United drew 1-1 with Fulham at Elland Road last night.
Leeds United boss Garry Monk has revealed to TV Yorkshire that he is especially pleased for striker Chris Wood following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.
The Whites looked set for a third successive Championship defeat when Tom Cairney fired the visitors ahead with 13 minutes to go at Elland Road last night.
But the towering New Zealand striker – who had missed a fine chance to equaliser – atoned for that gaffe with a superb last-minute overhead which rescued a point for out-of-form Leeds.
Wood was indeed a heroic figure last night, but he was jeered by United fans during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Birmingham City, and Monk says that the former Leicester City man will take lots of confidence from his goal.
“I was especially pleased for Chris, he missed an earlier one and could have easily felt sorry for him,” the 38-year-old said to TV Yorkshire.
“Frustration was coming his way but his mentality epitomised what the team were doing. I’m very happy for him to score that goal, it’ll give him a big boost.”
Leeds fans may be slightly irked by Wood’s celebration, in which the striker cupped his ear in an apparent reference to the reception that came his way on the weekend.
But they would love to be proven wrong by the 24-year-old – and there is only one way Wood can do that: goals.
Wood will hope to have a similar impact when Leeds visit Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday in perhaps their biggest test of the season so far.
