The Leeds United boss was upset by something specific on Saturday.

Garry Monk has told LUTV that Huddersfield United’s Aaron Mooy should have been sent off for the “horrendous” tackle made prior to scoring the goal which condemned Leeds United to a 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

A feisty Yorkshire derby was settled by Mooy’s 55th-minute strike which sealed a 1-0 win for Huddersfield at Elland Road and maintained their unbeaten start to the new Championship, but it was steeped in controversy.

Moments earlier, the Australian midfielder was perceived to have fouled Leeds man Liam Bridcutt in a challenge which Monk says was “totally out of control”, but the referee only deemed it a yellow card offence.

Of course, Mooy went on to hit the winner which consigned Monk’s side to a fourth defeat in six Championship outings, and the 38-year-old manager was disappointed that the Huddersfield man did not receive his marching orders prior to the goal.

“The irony of the goal is that the player who scored it should’ve been off the pitch,” he told LUTV. “It was a horrendous tackle that he made moments earlier; two-footed, off the ground and totally out of control.

“By my recollection, the rules are that you should be sent off, but he wasn’t and the irony is he gets the winning goal.”

Perhaps winning a point would have papered over the cracks to some extent. It was another sluggish home performance from the Whites and it is something Monk needs to change – and fast.

His side are 22nd in the Championship and it is not beyond the realms of possibility to wonder if ruthless owner Massimo Cellino is tempted to axe him before their promotion bid suffers any more damage.

Leeds, who host bottom-of-the-table Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, are seven points adrift of the top six, and eight behind second-placed Newcastle United.
