Leeds United beat Fleetwood on penalties at Highbury on Wednesday.
Manager Garry Monk has suggested to Leeds United’s official website that he was pleased about his side’s character in the League Cup win over Fleetwood Town on Wednesday – but believes goalscoring chances are still going begging.
Leeds booked their place in the second round of the competition on penalties last night after the contest finished 2-2 after two hours of football at Fleetwood.
Fresh from a 1-0 defeat at QPR on the first weekend of the Champioship season, Monk’s troops looked on course for a second loss in four days when Aaron Amadi Holloway’s 13th-minute opener seemed to be enough at Highbury.
But summer signing Marcus Antonsson – who missed a good chance at Loftus Road on Sunday – atoned for that gaffe by grabbing an 89th-minute equaliser against Fleetwood to force extra time.
United striker Chris Wood rolled home a penalty four minutes into the additional half-an-hour period, but Ashley Hunter levelled matters on 111 minutes as penalties loomed, though Leeds edged the shootout 5-4.
Monk’s side had chances to spare themselves and the visiting fans the anguish of penalties during regulation and extra-time but the opportunities were not taken.
And although the 38-year-old is pleased with the response after QPR, Monk raised slight concerns about his side’s ruthlessness in front of goal.
“I thought the players showed really good character and that was the biggest thing for me after a difficult result over the weekend,” he told the club’s official website.
On the chances, he added: “We should have put the game to bed before that, especially in the 90 minutes when we were pushing for it.
“Even in that period of extra-time when we got the second goal, we had a number of chances and we should have taken them to make it that bit more comfortable for ourselves. “
