Leeds boss asked if Edgar Cani has a chance of starting v Watford

Leeds head coach Neil Redfearn has been discussing the forward’s chances of starting this weekend’s Championship clash.

Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn has remained coy on the prospect of Edgar Cani getting a run-out for the first team against Watford this weekend, according to the club’s official audioBoom channel.

During a pre-match press conference, Redfearn was asked whether the on-loan Leeds striker has a chance of starting against Watford.

His response, however, can be considered a disappointing one for the 25-year-old, with Redfearn appearing to suggest he is relatively far from being properly considered as a starter.

“Obviously, Edgar’s got to adjust to the standards of this football and get to the tempo of the football,” the 49-year-old told reporters.

“It’s an unforgiving division; it’s a thankless task as a lone striker, if that’s how we do play. It’s a big ask for him and we just have to see how things pan out in training.”

As Opta stats show, Cani has only made two Championship appearances for Leeds so far this term, playing 45 minutes in total. One of those came against Brighton this week, during which the forward failed to make a notable impact.

Only three players have played less for United this season and the 25-year-old’s contribution pales in comparison with fellow January loanee Sol Bamba, who has instantly become a first-team regular for the Yorkshire side.

Redfearn has a number of options up front, including the likes of Mirco Antenucci, Souleymane Doukara, Billy Sharp and Cani if current first choice Steve Morison is unfit this weekend.

The Leeds boss, however, appears reluctant to use them – and his latest response suggests Cani may be in for a significant wait before being given a proper chance to prove his worth at Elland Road.
