Stevenage have withdrawn Leeds and Spurs target Ben Wilmot from squad to face Newport as transfer edges closer.
Stevenage have confirmed that Ben Wilmot has been withdrawn from their squad to face Newport County in League Two tomorrow (April 7) as a transfer nears completion.
Speculation about Wilmot joining either a Premier League or Championship club has been ongoing for some time and now chairman Phil Wallace has revealed it is close to happening.
“Ben came back from International Duty with England last week and we have had developments that suggest a deal will be agreed shortly for him to move when the window opens,” Wallace said in an official statement.
“We have had interest from Premier League and Championship clubs, which is not surprising when Ben is recognised by England as being one of the top four centre halves at his age level, with the other three coming from Man City, Chelsea and Spurs.
“We have made public our valuation and the closer we are getting to that the more likely it is that Ben will move.”
Where is he going?
Wallace has confirmed that Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are three of the sides from the English top flight in the running for the 18-year-old’s signature.
Yet there are others, with the Independent reporting last month that Watford had a £500,000 offer for Wilmot rejected in the January transfer window.
Spurs also had a bid turned down at the same time, while Brighton and Hove Albion, Derby County, Leeds United and Liverpool having all shown interest in the centre-back – who is valued at £1m.
Wilmot is an academy product at Broadhall Way and was promoted to the first team at the end of last season and has now made 15 senior appearances for the fourth tier outfit.
