Leeds are in the Championship playoffs but Barnsley’s Mowatt, who used to play for the Elland Road side, explains why he has mixed feelings.
Alex Mowatt, who used to play for Leeds United, admits that he has mixed feelings over the Whites’ Championship playoff bid, the Elland Road side facing Derby over two semi-final legs.
The one-time Leeds midfielder will be back in the Championship next season after Barnsley’s promotion was confirmed, the Tykes finishing the League One season second in the table.
Defeats for Portsmouth and Sunderland at the end of April sealed the Yorkshire return to the second tier and Mowatt has been a big part of their success this season.
The 24-year-old, sold by Leeds to the Oakwell side two years ago, has played in all of their 46 league games this season, scoring eight goals and claiming six assists (Transfermarkt).
As much as Mowatt is keen on Marcelo Bielsa’s side finally returning to the Premier League after 15 years away, he also would like to face them on the pitch at Elland Road and Oakwell.
“I do want to play Leeds at their place and here,” he told the Yorkshire Post. “But I hope they do well too as I still have a lot of friends there, so if they get promoted I will be really happy for them. But if not, we will play them next season.”
Leeds, who finished third in the table, head to Derby’s Pride Park for a Saturday evening (5:15pm) kickoff before hosting Frank Lampard’s Rams at Elland Road on Wednesday night, 7:45pm kickoff.
