Leeds United were left to rue a decision made way back in 2007, as Tom Cairney again came back to haunt the Whites with a last-gasp equaliser for Fulham on Tuesday night.

The Whites led for much of the game after Tim Ream’s early own goal, but after Kalvin Phillips was given a red card, Cairney popped up with a long range effort to draw Fulham level.

The midfielder has now scored four goals in eight games against Leeds, continuing to haunt the team that cast him aside almost ten years ago.

Cairney joined the Leeds youth setup at the age of just seven, but was released in 2007 before heading to Hull, Blackburn Rovers and Fulham.

Now one of the Championship’s top playmakers, the 26-year-old continues to make Leeds pay, and Tuesday’s goal may have been the sweetest yet as he cost Leeds two points, with Fulham looking to catch the Whites in pursuit of a play-off place.

That’s now eight goals and nine assists from midfield for Cairney this season, and as noted by the London Evening Standard, Fulham allegedly valued the playmaker at £20million in January.

Cairney told the Standard that he shed a tear when he was released by Leeds, but he continues to make the Whites pay for their decision – and fans are sick of the sight of him as well.

After his stunning leveller on Tuesday, fans took to Twitter to share their frustration at Cairney again scoring against Leeds, and asking just why the club even thought about releasing him in the first place.

Leeds would no doubt love to have a player of Cairney’s quality in their squad right now, and whilst a host of talented players have come through the Elland Road academy, Cairney may just be the club’s biggest regret – and it seems that the midfielder has no intention of ending his revenge on Leeds, especially having accused the club’s fans of lacking class after Tuesday’s clash.
