Speaking on The Beautiful Game Podcast, Leeds United’s Tyler Roberts has named his best position.
Roberts is a rather versatile player, able to play in the midfield or in the attack, but the Welshman maintains that his best role is as a number nine.

After years of chopping and changing at Leeds, Roberts has finally named his best position, and he claims he’s a number nine rather than a midfield player.
“Over my career I would like to say I’m a number nine striker. I grew up learning that position and it’s only over the past few years that I’ve played as a number 10. I think that’s been good for me, because as a number nine you know there’s pressure, and being young and learning the game, as a number 10 I don’t have to be the one to hold the ball up all the time, and I’ve been able to learn, so it’s been good, but definitely I’d say a number nine for sure,” Roberts said.
Hardly been used there
Roberts may love playing as a number nine, but he hardly plays there at all.
According to transfermakt, the Welshman last played as a number nine on the 16th of December 2020 against Newcastle United, and since then he’s been exclusively used as either a number 10 or a second-striker.
To be fair, we can understand why Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t used Roberts as a striker since the turn of the year, Leeds have two fantastic strikers in the shape of Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo, so it’s bound to be difficult for him to get a chance in his favourite role.
Fingers crossed Roberts can convince Bielsa to give him a chance in his preferred position next term.
