Speaking to the LUFC Fanzone Podcast, Mateusz Bogusz has shared that he almost signed for Leeds six months before eventually arriving at Elland Road.
The Polish youngster joined the Whites in January 2019, but he very nearly joined in the summer of 2018, but his previous club blocked the move.
“Leeds wanted me to sign in the summer, but my before club didn’t want to let me go, and they said it wasn’t time to go. I waited another six months and I think Leeds and another club were following me,” Bogusz said.
“After that, in the winter, before I signed for Leeds, I was in Leeds for four days and I spoke to Victor Orta and the other guys who was in the meeting. They showed me everything they liked, and they showed me everything they didn’t like as well, and I saw that they really wanted me to sign.”

This is certainly interesting to hear.
Of course, It doesn’t really matter, as the midfielder became a Leeds player eventually, but this is an intriguing insight into the workings of Victor Orta and United’s transfer strategy.
Leeds clearly identify targets and stick to them if they believe they have the talent to contribute to the team.
A player from the Polish third division isn’t someone you’d imagine Leeds would be overly keen on tracking, but they didn’t give up on signing Bogusz, and got their man eventually.
