Kalvin Phillips was Leeds United’s goalscoring hero in their opening day victory over Bolton Wanderers.
Kalvin Phillips has suggested that he is expecting more goals this season after bagging a crucial brace in Leeds’ opening day victory over Bolton on Sunday, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.
Before the clash with the Trotters, Phillips may have perhaps been left out of many fans’ preferred lineups, but Thomas Christiansen showed plenty of faith in the academy graduate – who signed a new four-year deal in the days leading up to the game – and selected him alongside Eunan O’Kane in the middle of the park.
And the manager’s faith was vindicated as Phillips scored twice to help the Whites come away from the Macron Stadium with a 3-2 win to kick off the campaign, and after the game, the 21-year-old suggested that it was a dream come true to make such an impact.
“Obviously every game I go into I dream of something like that. I’m just glad that it fell to me at the right time.
“I only scored one last season so I thought I need to get more goals. After two today I’m pretty chilled and there should be more coming.”
As mentioned previously, it is likely that many supporters would have had Ronaldo Vieira alongside O’Kane in their preferred lineups in the build-up to the game rather than Phillips, but the youngster took his opportunity with both hands.
The brace has seen Phillips double his tally for goals in his entire professional career in one game, and that will be especially encouraging after a season where the central midfielders – Phillips, O’Kane, Vieira and Liam Bridcutt – contributed just two league goals between them.
So if the midfield can now support Chris Wood with plenty of goals, then Leeds will surely be in a much better position to improve on last term’s excellent season.
