Glasgow Rangers defender Lee Wallace got the chance to impress Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

When Lee Wallace was brought on for the final couple of minutes of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership clash with Motherwell back in August, it did appear that Steven Gerrard was ready to hand the former captain a lifeline after a summer full of speculation.

The equaliser Rangers conceded in those final moments may not have helped Wallace’s case, but it may have surprised some that he went into November having not played another minute of competitive football for the Gers.

Borna Barisic has endured a difficult spell with injury, but Andy Halliday has really stepped up in that left-back role when Gerrard has decided not to use Jon Flanagan in that position.

So it appears that Wallace may now be back at square one.

And unfortunately for the 31-year-old, his situation appears to have received another setback as he lined up for Rangers’ development side as they came up against Brentford B at Ibrox on Sunday.

The game was watched by Steven Gerrard, and one of the first things the Gers boss would have seen was a misplaced pass from Wallace that ultimately led to Brentford’s first goal.

Rangers would recover from going a goal down and win the game 3-2 thanks to a brace from Stephen Kelly and a winner from Dapo Mebude, but with so much competition in front of him in the pecking order, Wallace probably needed a flawless performance to really catch Gerrard’s eye.

Unfortunately for the long-serving defender, a costly mistake has seemingly dealt him a blow that he could have done without.
