Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers side are currently third in the Scottish Premiership table.

Lee Wallace has told the Daily Record that Rangers believe that they can challenge for the Scottish Premiership title much sooner than the three years former boss Ally McCoist suggested it may take.

Mark Warburton’s men are just five games into their first campaign back in the top flight, but have certainly found life much more difficult than many were expecting with just two wins coming from those fixtures while they were also humbled at the hands of Celtic in the first Old Firm meeting.

And while the 5-1 loss made McCoist’s pre-match prediction that the Gers may not challenge for a while look like it may be quite accurate, Wallace has insisted that the squad is capable of reaching the summit in a much shorter space of time.

“I have to respect my old manager. Of course, you have to listen his opinion, albeit that we want to do it a lot sooner than that. There is no doubt about it,” he told the Record.

“Our current manager will certainly share the belief we want to do it a lot sooner than that.”

Despite their disappointing start, there is no doubt that there is plenty of quality within the Light Blues’ squad. The likes of Joey Barton and Niko Kranjcar may be yet to find anything like their best form following their summer moves, but they have shown throughout their careers that they have the quality the side will need to elevate themselves further up the table.

And while the Gers have looked almost nothing like the team that shone so often last season, it must be remembered that they are still third in the table and have suffered just one defeat in all competitions.

So if their star players begin to find their best form and the team is able to start playing in the manner that brought them so much success last term, they arguably stand an excellent chance of putting themselves in the title picture much earlier than what McCoist is expecting.
