Lee McCulloch suggests Rossiter can become Gerrard’s first Ibrox skipper

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard needs to find his next Ibrox captain this summer.

Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has surprisingly backed midfielder Jordan Rossiter to become the next Ibrox skipper under Steven Gerrard, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times.

The Gers landed Gerrard as their new boss back in May, and he has been busy bringing in new signings to boost his squad, with six new faces arriving so far.

Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria have all arrived to join Rangers’ revolution this summer, but this just the start of Gerrard’s work.

Gerrard certainly faces one huge decision this summer, as he must decide on a new captain at Ibrox given that Lee Wallace’s Rangers career appears to be at an end.

James Tavernier filled in with the armband last season, whilst the likes of Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans or even new signing McGregor – a former Rangers veteran – may claim to have the experience and leadership to take on the role.

However, former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has offered his view to the Glasgow Evening Times, suggesting that Jordan Rossiter should be a surprise contender for the role.

Rossiter, 21, came up through the Liverpool ranks and was even compared to Gerrard before joining Rangers in 2016, but he has made just 11 appearances for the club having suffered through injury hell.

Now, McCulloch has admitted that whilst it’s a ‘left field idea’, he thinks Rossiter is a candidate because of his relationship with Gerrard and his mentality, backing him to potentially wear the armband next season.

“Here is a left field idea. Jordan Rossiter as captain of Rangers might sound a crazy given the chronic injury problems that lad has had over the past two years, but please bear with me,” said McCulloch. “If, and it’s a pretty big if, the midfielder can get fit and stay fit, I have a feeling that he will be in Gerrard’s thoughts.”

“Why? Well, the two know each other and Rossiter was captain of the Liverpool under-19 team and I know how highly rated he was down there, but the lad has just had no luck with injuries at all. What I do know is he’s a player who has a strong mentality, which he’s needed over the past two season, and that is a huge part of that job,” he added.
