Rangers face Celtic on Sunday in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has urged Graeme Murty to call former Light Blues manager Walter Smith in his Glasgow Evening Times column in order to gain advice ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm derby.
Murty is preparing his side for what is arguably the most important game surrounding his future in the Ibrox dugout against bitter rivals Celtic, who are looking to secure a second successive treble under Brendan Rodgers.
The Hoops will take a massive step closer to doing just that with a win over Rangers on Sunday at Hampden Park, in what is the Scottish Cup semi-final.
Murty, 43, is contracted to the Gers as manager until the end of the season and McCulloch reckons he should request the knowledge and experience of legend Smith ahead of such a crucial encounter.
“Graeme has said before that he has spoken to Walter a couple of times and, if it was me in his position, I would certainly be phoning him this week. Put a call in and get a bit of advice,” McCulloch said.
“Graeme is obviously his own man and if he chooses to do that, great. If he gets advice from anyone else or speaks to anyone else, then that is up to him.
“But, if it was me, I would be asking Walter about a few things and getting a feel for how he used to prepare for Old Firm fixtures and how he tackled games like this.”
The Gers have failed to beat Celtic since returning to the Scottish Premiership, with Murty boasting the best record against the Scottish champions of Rangers three managers since regaining their top-flight status.
His two draws and a narrow 3-2 loss eclipses that of Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha, and the former Reading stalwart will be using that as inspiration to produce an unlikely win over the Bhoys.
