Lee McCulloch urges Gerrard to sign two playmakers next month

Rangers are looking to bring new faces to Ibrox in January.

Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Steven Gerrard needs to bring in two playmakers in January.

Rangers beat Hamilton Academical 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a goal from Daniel Candeias, but it was far from a stellar performance.

The Gers dominated the game but didn’t have that extra bit of quality in the final third to give the scoreline a more emphatic edge.

Rangers are expected to bring in a new striker in January, with Umar Sadiq heading out of the club, but additions are also needed behind the striker.

Ovie Ejaria has returned to Liverpool already, and even if he hadn’t, Rangers still needed to bring in at least one creative midfielder to improve the cutting edge in the final third.

Gerrard may already have a plan for that; the Belfast Telegraph report that Southampton veteran Steven Davis is set to rejoin Rangers in January, whilst The Mirror believe Everton youngster Kieran Dowell could join on loan.

Those two additions would go some way to helping, and ex-Rangers captain McCulloch had suggested that Gerrard definitely needs to sign two playmakers next month.

McCulloch feels Rangers need much more creativity, and one playmaker isn’t enough right now, stating that the Gers need multiple players who can unlock defences from attacking midfield positions.

“For me, attacking midfield remains the priority, and I feel that they may even need two new arrivals in there of real quality,” said McCulloch. “The problem that Rangers have in that position was clear to see against Hamilton, and that is one they will continue to face. Teams had lost that fear of taking on Rangers for a while there and were coming to Ibrox and having a real go, but now that respect has returned, and we are seeing more and more teams reverting to packing their defence and often leaving just one body up the park.”

“That means Rangers require people that can unlock defences from the number 10 position, and I think that Gerrard will be looking at players who can take the ball on the half-turn and beat a man as well as having a defence-splitting pass in his locker,” he added.
