Former Rangers ace Lee McCulloch has backed Josh Windass to excel under Steven Gerrard.

Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Steven Gerrard will have a big impact on Ibrox stars – particularly Josh Windass.

The Gers landed Gerrard as their new manager last month, and he has already been equipped with two new faces as Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield have signed for the club.

Gerrard will also be busy making decisions about current Rangers players as he prepares his squad for next term, with a key decision coming over the future of playmaker Josh Windass.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Daily Record report that whilst Premier League sides Burnley and Cardiff City are interested in signing Windass this summer, Gerrard has decided that he wants to keep him at Ibrox.

Windass, 24, joined Rangers from Accrington Stanley in 2016, and enjoyed a fine season this past term with 18 goals in 41 games in all comeptitions.

The attacking midfielder is still often criticised by Rangers fans over his mentality, but former Gers captain Lee McCulloch has now backed Windass for success under Gerrard at Rangers.

McCulloch has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Windass is ‘different class’, and feels that Gerrard will have a big impact on Windass, with McCulloch feeling he is showing great desire by training on his own earlier than planned this summer.

“It will be interesting to see what impact Steven Gerrard has on the Rangers players from the current squad that he is keeping around the club, and none more so than Josh Windass,” said McCulloch. “I think Windass is fantastic. Different class. He’s got everything you need to play at the top level. He has the physical attributes and the speed to probably play in the English Premier League.”

“Probably the one thing he needs though is a run of consistent games in order to kick on a bit. If he has been in training by himself at Auchenhowie as has been rumoured, then that’s brilliant. It shows that he has the hunger and desire to do better. That is the attitude that will be needed if he is to get the best from himself,” he added.
