Former Ibrox captain Lee McCulloch has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers can win the Scottish Premiership title this season ahead of Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic.

Rangers are third in the league table at the moment with 21 points from 11 matches, five points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian, who have played 12 games.

Celtic have also played 11 games in the Scottish Premiership so far this season and have picked up 25 points.

The Hoops, who are currently second in the standings, have rediscovered their form and are on a roll.

Former Rangers captain McCulloch, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 2007 until 2015, believes that the Gers can compete with Celtic if they keep up with them until the Old Firm derby comes around.

McCulloch wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times: “They also have a terrific manager in Brendan Rodgers, so Gerrard’s task to compete on all fronts against them is a huge one.

“But it’s not one that I think is beyond him if he is given the time to build on the excellent work he has already done since coming to Glasgow.

“The most important thing now for Rangers is staying on Celtic’s coat-tails going into the next Old Firm game at Ibrox between Christmas and New Year.

“That has the potential to be a massive, season-shaping game for Rangers if they can stay in touch with their rivals in the next few weeks.”

Challenging for the title

Rangers have been inconsistent in the Scottish Premiership, and their away form also needs to improve.

However, that the Gers are only four points behind the strongest team in Scotland should be encouraging for the Ibrox faithful.
