Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he agrees with Steven Gerrard over Ryan Jack’s position.

The Gers hammered Motherwell 7-1 on Sunday afternoon in a superb performance, which is just what boss Gerrard needed after some poor performances.

It was the perfect way to head into the international break, and a number of Rangers players will be off with their countries over the coming week.

One of those players is midfielder Jack, who has been called into the Scotland squad for upcoming games against Albania and Israel.

26-year-old Jack has been impressive under Gerrard this season, and now has the chance to build on the two caps he already has for Scotland, both of which have arrived since signing for Rangers.

However, Jack played as a right back in a game against the Netherlands last year, and there have been suggestions that he could fill that role for Alex McLeish, with Scotland struggling for a top right back.

Gerrard told The Times that he wouldn’t change Jack’s position from a midfielder having impressed there this season, and ex-Rangers ace McCulloch has agreed.

McCulloch has suggested that Gerrard is right about Jack’s position, urging McLeish not to switch his position to play as a right back, as he won’t let anybody down playing in central midfield; his natural position.

“It’s good to see Ryan Jack back in the squad. I think he should have been in from the start, but I can understand that as he has been in and out a little for Rangers that he might not be an automatic pick for Scotland just at the minute,” said McCulloch. “I think he’s been really good when he has played lately though. He keeps it simple, he gets about and breaks the play up, and I think his game could well be ideal for this Scotland team with those attributes.”

“Like Steven Gerrard though, I don’t see him being the answer to the problems at right-back. He’s a central midfielder and I don’t see him getting up and down the line putting crosses in. I know he played there and did ok against The Netherlands, but that should have been a one-off. If you want to get the best out of him, then he should be in the centre of the park, and he certainly won’t let anybody down,” he added.
