Lee McCulloch praises Rangers defender James Tavernier

Graeme Murty’s Glasgow Rangers lost against Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic on Sunday.

Lee McCulloch has praised Rangers defender James Tavernier in The Glasgow Evening Times for his performance against Celtic at the weekend.

The former Rangers star, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 2007 until 2015, has stated that Tavernier at least had a go at Celtic.

Rangers suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at the hands of their Old Firm rivals Celtic at Hampden Park in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Tavernier, who moved to Rangers from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £200,000, started the match on Sunday afternoon and played for the entire 90 minutes.

Former Kilmarnock manager McCulloch wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times: “I felt that James Tavernier at least had a go. He had the armband on and you could see it was hurting him but it wasn’t enough.”

Rangers’ performance against Celtic was hugely disappointing, and although the players did not play well, Tavernier did at least try.

It is now important for Rangers to regroup themselves and turn their focus on the Scottish Premiership, as the Gers can still finish second in the table behind Celtic, who look set to win the title yet again this season.
