Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are set to endure a trophy-less first season under Steven Gerrard.
Lee McCulloch has written in The Glasgow Evening Times that Steven Gerrard will be a dead man walking at Rangers if he doesn’t win a trophy next season, which he calls ‘humongous’ for the club.
Rangers are set to end an otherwise promising first year under Gerrard without any silverware.
The Gers are a whopping 10 points behind Celtic as the Hoops close in on an eighth successive Premiership title, while Aberdeen knocked them out of both domestic cup competitions.
The 37-year-old, in his first senior management role, has always said that this season would be a failure if he didn’t add to the club’s trophy haul. He even suggested last week that he wouldn’t be light Blues boss for long if another ‘failure’ follows this one.
And Rangers legend McCulloch suggests that Gerrard might’ve been given an ultimatum by the board that a lack of silverware next term would result in his dismissal.
“Gerrard has brought hope but hope alone doesn’t win you football matches and with Celtic going for nine in a row, next season is humongous,” he told The Glasgow Evening Times.
“The manager said only last week that he won’t be here if he can’t win something for Rangers next season. He’s probably right.
“Gerrard didn’t come out with that for no reason. That’s the gig. He’s maybe been told that by someone at boardroom level. I don’t know.”
It’s worth noting that Gerrard did lead the club into the group stage of the Europa League, a huge achievement when you consider that Rangers – then under Pedro Caixinha – bowed out at the first qualification hurdle 12 months previous.
But things have gone a bit stale since – and definitely since the turn of the year. His transfer policy is massive this summer and unless he gets it spot-on, it’ll be difficult to deny Celtic a ninth consecutive league title by 2020.
