Lee McCulloch claims that Rangers are now seeing the ‘real’ Steven Davis

Rangers re-signed Northern Ireland midfielder Steven Davis on loan from Premier League side Southampton during the January transfer window.

Lee McCulloch has claimed that Steven Davis is now proving his worth to Rangers supporters after having his ‘critics’ earlier on in the season.

The 34-year-old midfielder returned to Ibrox during the January transfer window when he made a loan switch from Premier League side Southampton.

Initially, he struggled to break into the first-team and showcase his talents because he had only played 96 minutes in England’s top flight prior to making the switch to Scotland.

Former Gers man, McCulloch was full of praise for Davis because he feels he is now showing the fans what he is about after starting three out of his side’s last four Premiership encounters.

“But it was always going to take Davo, and Jermain Defoe, time to get up to speed after not playing much football down south earlier in the season,” McCulloch told the Evening Times. “Steven has got a bit of everything and it was good to see him playing so well in the wins over Hearts and Motherwell last week.

“It was important for him to get a run of two or three games to get fitter and sharper but nobody should have doubted his quality. That is starting to shine through now and you are seeing what Davo can bring to a team once again.

“I am delighted for him because he did have his critics earlier in the season when he was perhaps a yard off it and wasn’t himself. You are seeing the real Steven Davis now.”

Davis’ loan spell at Rangers ends in June and it remains to be seen whether or not he will be part of Gerrard’s plans next season as he aims to win the title.

In his first season in charge, Gerrard has fallen well short, but he will be looking to win some silverware next term now he has got his feet firmly under the table.

There is no doubt that if Davis stays on then he would be an astute signing because of the experience and calmness he brings to the team.

Over the course of this season, he has played 10 Premiership matches for the Glasgow club, providing one assist, but he is yet to score for the club since his return [transfermarkt].
