Lee McCulloch has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers have a ‘real gem’ on their hands in the form of Glenn Middleton.

Middleton has broken into Rangers’ senior side this season under Steven Gerrard at just 18 years of age.

In addition to impressing in the Scottish Premiership, the teenage has also dazzled in the Gers’ Europa League campaign at times during the season.

It was Graeme Murty who snapped up Middleton from Norwich City last January, and McCulloch admits that he ‘loves’ watching him play the game.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “I can’t stress enough how impressed I have been with Glenn Middleton since his breakthrough at Rangers. I love the way he plays, and I just love watching him.

“Middleton has been managed very well by Steven Gerrard. The fans are obviously keen to see as much of him as possible, but while he has been heavily involved in the first-team picture, he has often found himself coming off the bench to try and impact games.

“And to be fair to him, he usually does just that. Rangers have got a real gem.”

You wonder what will become of Middleton when Ryan Kent returns from injury.

Despite impressing under Gerrard, he could potentially become Rangers’ third-choice left winger, behind Kent and of course Eros Grezda.

It’s fierce competition, but it’s perfectly healthy and it might well help Middleton bring his game to the next level. He is clearly hungry to impress and Kent’s return will give him more than enough incentive.
