Lee McCulloch believes Rangers target Derek McInnes knows it’s time to move

Lee McCulloch has suggested that Glasgow Rangers target Derek McInnes taking the Ibrox job is the perfect fit.

Lee McCulloch has told Sky Sports that he believes that it is a matter of time before Derek McInnes succeeds Pedro Caixinha as Rangers boss, insisting that the Aberdeen boss will know deep down that he has taken the Dons as far as they can go.

McInnes has done an incredible job at Pittodrie, turning Aberdeen into Celtic’s nearest challengers in the Scottish Premiership on a regular basis – so it is not surprising that he has been linked with the post at Ibrox following Caixinha’s departure.

The Gers go into this international break still looking for their next manager. But McCulloch is confident that the Light Blues would be making the right decision going after McInnes, and added that the 46-year-old knows, but will not admit right now, that it is time to leave Aberdeen.

He told Sky Sports: “He’s played for the club, he knows the demands of the club and his recruitment for Aberdeen has been fantastic. The transformation from when he took over Aberdeen to where they are now has been incredible. How much further can he take Aberdeen?

“I think it’s probably the right time for Derek, although Derek probably couldn’t say this, it’s the time to leave.

“I think Rangers is the perfect fit and Derek is the perfect fit for the board so I think it should only be a matter of time.”

While many will undoubtedly agree that McInnes has taken Aberdeen almost as far as he can, he would be forgiven for taking time to decide whether joining Rangers right now is the best move for him if he is offered the chance.

Rangers have the potential, of course, to move themselves back towards the summit in the table and take the position that Aberdeen currently occupy. But there will surely be a number of factors that McInnes will need more information about – like transfer and wage budgets – before he can decide definitively whether he is the right man to lead Rangers back into the title picture.
