Lee McCulloch has told Sky Sports that he believes the signing of Jermain Defoe will be a “gamechanger” for Rangers as Steven Gerrard’s men look to beat Celtic in the race to win the Scottish Premiership.

It has been widely reported that 36-year-old striker Defoe is set to sign an 18-month loan deal to join the Teddy Bears from Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth – which will see him team up with former England teammate Gerrard.

Defoe is believed to be one of four big signings made by Gerrard early in the January window, with ex-Ibrox midfielder Steven Davis, Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones and Dundee midfielder Glen Kamara all expected to join.

Former Rangers captain McCulloch believes the signing of Defoe will come as a huge boost to Rangers, before challenging Celtic to see what they can do in terms of bringing in a new striker.

“It’s a massive statement, it’s a great start to the transfer window for Rangers,” McCulloch said.

“Both Old Firm teams are sitting level on points and now it’s basically over to Celtic to see what signings they can make because Jermain Defoe, with over 100 goals in the Premier League, is a fantastic signing for the club.”

The former England international earned 57 caps for his country, scoring 20 times and once at a World Cup in 2010. He sits in seventh place in the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers.

A move for Defoe is yet to be confirmed with a medical set to take place over the weekend, but it is clear to many that Defoe has agreed a move to Ibrox and could join the squad in their training camp in Tenerife.
