Lee McCulloch backs Rangers’ reported move for Umar Sadiq

Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers reportedly want Umar Sadiq, while Ibrox forward Eduardo Herrera has been linked with moves away.

Former Ibrox captain Lee McCulloch has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Umar Sadiq would be a good signing for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

Rangers are interested in signing Sadiq from AS Roma in the summer transfer window, according to The Scottish Sun.

It has been reported that the Ibrox club want to secure the services of the 21-year-old striker on a season-long loan deal.

The Gers will reportedly have to pay a hefty six-figure loan fee to get the Nigeria Under-23 international striker this summer.

Former Rangers captain McCulloch, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 2007 until 2015 and won the league title thrice with the Gers, has suggested that Sadiq would be a good signing for Gerrard’s team.

McCulloch has also suggested that Eduardo Herrera is running out of time to impress new Rangers manager and Liverpool legend Gerrard.

Herrera has been on the books of Rangers since the summer of 2017 when he joined from UNAM for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Record to be worth £1.5 million.

The 29-year-old forward failed to make a massive impact at Ibriox last season, and, according to The Express, Gerrard wants to offload the Mexico international, with Toluca and Pumas claimed to be interested in his services.

McCulloch wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times: “By all accounts, the big Nigerian, who stands 6ft 4in in his studs, is a target man. I think that is exactly the type of player Gerrard should be attempting to bring in.

“Sadiq is only 21. But he has had stints at Bologna and Torino in Italy and Breda in the Netherlands in the past couple of years.

“So you would hope he would be able to cope with the demands of playing for Rangers in Scotland as well as in Europe.

“Herrera is running out of time to kick on and prove himself. You can tell he has got ability, but he hasn’t produced it in games nearly enough for me.”

Busy summer for Rangers

Rangers have been quite busy in the summer transfer window so far and have made a number of signings, including Scott Arfield, Jon Flanagan and Allan McGregor.

The Gers have finished third in the Scottish Premiership for the past two seasons and will be aiming to challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the league title during the 2018-19 campaign.
