McAllister has been linked to Rangers, with Steven Gerrard reportedly in talks to become the new manager at Ibrox.
Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch has claimed in Glasgow Evening Times column that his old side need to appoint someone like Gary McAllister if Steven Gerrard is to be named the next manager at Ibrox.
It has been widely reported that 37-year-old Gerrard, who is currently Liverpool’s Under-18 manager, is in talks over becoming the next permanent manager at Ibrox.
It is believed that McAllister, who also turned out for Liverpool and boasts 59 Scotland caps, would be Gerrard’s first choice as assistant north of the border if indeed the Reds legend took over.
McCulloch believes Gerrard would be a bold, yet brave appointment at Rangers but has urged his former side to appoint an experienced assistant to help guide the inexperienced manager into his first senior role.
“Yes, he [Gerrard] is inexperienced as a manager. But he is very experienced in the world of football,” McCulloch said. “He can bring in an experienced assistant to help him and having someone like Gary McAllister alongside him will certainly be a benefit.”
Graeme Murty has departed Ibrox, despite initially replacing Pedro Caixinha until the end of the season. However, back-to-back losses to Celtic, which have ended in 4-0 and 5-0 defeats, had ended Murty’s chances of winning the job.
The Gers currently sit in third place in the Scottish Premiership, three points behind Aberdeen after Sunday’s Old Firm loss but they can get back to winning ways on Saturday at Ibrox with a victory over Kilmarnock.
