Lee Johnson comments on reported Aston Villa and Newcastle United target Adam Webster

Aston Villa and Newcastle United are reportedly keen on the services of Bristol City defender Adam Webster.

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has interestingly stated that teams like Aston Villa and Newcastle United are ‘rightly’ interest in his player Adam Webster.

The Sun have claimed that Villa are plotting a move for the highly-rated centre-back, whilst TeamTalk have also claimed that Newcastle are also keen on his services.

Villa earned promotion to the Premier League last season and they will be well aware of the qualities that lie in the second tier of English football.

Speaking to Sky Sports News (20/06/2019 at 10:30 am), Johnson responded to his players being touted for moves away from the club, as he also shared his thoughts on Webster.

“I think you have to do both [sell players on for big-money and invest],” Johnson told Sky Sports News. “You have to push on all fronts. You need to invest, but it’s also important that we provide that pathway because often players aren’t given the opportunity. It’s always a fine balance.

On players like Webster being linked with other clubs & with trying to focus on the new season:

“I think that’s part of the fun,” Johnson added. “From Webster’s point of view, there are a lot of Premier League clubs looking at him and rightly so because they wouldn’t be doing their due diligence properly [if they weren’t]. He’s a very good player that we want to build around at Bristol City. We are in a position that we don’t need to sell players.”

Bristol City have previous of allowing their talented players make the switch up to England’s top-flight if a club comes calling, i.e. Lloyd Kelly, Joe Bryan and Bobby Reid.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Webster become the next player who leaves Ashton Gate this summer and make a move to a Premier League club.

Where Webster will go will remain to be seen, but there’s no doubt a player of his quality will have ambitions to move up a division, and if someone comes calling then he more than likely will be departing.
