Glasgow Rangers defender Lee Hodson has left Ibrox on loan for the rest of the campaign.

In comments reported by STV, Lee Hodson has admitted that he was hugely frustrated with his lack of game-time at Rangers, but insisted that he thought that James Tavernier had been fantastic at right-back.

Hodson has been at Ibrox since 2016, but has spent the large majority of his spell with the Gers as an understudy to Tavernier. The Northern Ireland international went into this season having made just 17 Scottish Premiership appearances for the club across his two campaigns.

And with Jon Flanagan and Borna Barisic arriving this summer, it surprised few Rangers fans when it was announced that he had made the move to join St Mirren on loan for this season. And after completing his move, the 26-year-old reflected on his time with the Gers as well as the man who has spent the majority of the last two years keeping him out of the side.

“It has been frustrating, as a footballer you want to playing week in, week out,” he said, as reported by STV. “James Tavernier has been fantastic, he’s been given the captaincy so I knew it was going to be difficult to get the game time I wanted.

“But credit to Tav, he has done fantastic last year and done well again this year. He’s a big player for Rangers so it was important for me to go out and play football.”

During Hodson’s first season, there were a handful of performances that suggested that the former Watford ace could prove to be a genuine rival for Tavernier – especially as the latter initially struggled to replicate his Championship form following promotion.

However, Tavernier has really kicked on and now established himself as one of the most important members of the squad, earning the captaincy and keeping the armband once Steven Gerrard was appointed.

With plenty of full-backs still within the Rangers squad, it would be no surprise if many of the Ibrox faithful were writing off Hodson’s chances of playing for the club again. But he will certainly be looking to prove a point to his parent club while he is away.
