Aston Villa were held to a 0-0 draw at Villa Park on Monday evening by West Ham United.

Lee Hendrie has told BBC Five Live that Aston Villa boss Dean Smith’s substitutions against West Ham United weren’t particularly impressive.

Villa could only manage a 0-0 draw against West Ham on Monday, despite playing against 10 men for a portion of the contest.

The claret and blues did not pose much of a threat in front of their own supporters.

And Hendrie feels like Smith should have brought on Keinan Davis far earlier than he did.

Hendrie said: “I feel they missed a trick. He should have brought Davis on earlier and sacrificed a defensive midfielder.

“But he brought on another defensive midfielder and then in the last 10 minutes brought Keinan on. It looked like they had run out of ideas to me.”

Smith opted to use Douglas Luiz as his first substitute for Villa, but the change didn’t have the desired impact.

Villa were actually arguably worse against 10 men than they were 11, with West Ham having some chances to beat them on the counter.

Smith’s side have now failed to score in their last two outings, with some concerns forming about their lack of firepower.

Villa have taken just four points from their opening five games at Premier League level.
