Leeds picked up a 2-0 win against Hendrie’s former side Aston Villa yesterday.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has been praising the impact Garry Monk has had at Leeds United since taking over at the club in the summer.

Leeds found themselves move into fourth in the Championship this weekend after defeating Hendrie’s beloved Villa 2-0 at Elland Road.

It is a sharp contrast to the start of the season, when Leeds were struggling to adapt to Monk’s style and looked to be facing a tough campaign at the wrong end of the table.

Hendrie was asked during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game (03/12/2016) whether he felt Leeds should be looking at automatic promotion.

He had this to say, with high praise for Monk:

“I think he has really steadied the ship at Leeds, there’s no doubt about it.

“At the start of the season we could have maybe seen him walk out of the door with the chairman but he’s steadied the ship and anywhere around the play-offs before the end of the season they’ll be over the moon with.

“Leeds have been so up and down in recent seasons and they’ve got a chance this season with great young players in that squad.”

It’s true that after Leeds’ sloppy start to the season it looked as though Massimo Cellino, the controversial Leeds owner, might pull the cord on the Monk management experiment.

But the Italian stuck by Monk and it is now paying dividends, with Leeds potentially the form team in the Championship right now.

Next up for Leeds is a meeting with second-placed Brighton on Friday night, when they can show off their promotion credentials yet again.
