Ex-Aston Villa star Lee Hendrie sat down for an exclusive interview with the Express & Star, and delivered his verdict on his former club’s promotion hopes, whilst praising the job being done by Steve Bruce at Villa Park.

The Villans currently sit in fourth spot in the Championship table, seven points adrift of second placed Cardiff City, although they have played a game more than Neil Warnock’s in-form side.

Villa’s hopes of earning automatic promotion back to the top flight were dashed following consecutive Championship defeats last week, undoing all of their good work over the past few months.

Hendrie, who made 309 appearances for Villa, offered high words of praise for Bruce, when speaking exclusively to the Express & Star, and delivered his verdict on his former club’s promotion hopes:

“Look now how the club has developed and begun to gain some upward momentum under Steve. I think when he came into the job it was going to be a very, very tough job to take on. He had to get rid of players, bring players in and that doesn’t happen overnight. I think you are starting to see the rewards now. There’s still a fair few games to play and we’ve seen so many times it can turn around so quickly. Two or three defeats from the clubs above and two or three wins from Villa and they could be right back in the mix.”

Next up for Villa is a trip to Hull City on Saturday, before they play host to Reading three days later, and nothing less than a return of six points from those matches will do, if they are to stand any chance whatsoever of finishing inside the top two this season.
