Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has praised his old side on Twitter after their huge 5-0 win over Bristol City on New Year’s Day.

Scott Hogan opened the scoring for the Midlands giants in the 23rd minute against a Bristol City side that were second prior to the round of fixtures. Robert Snodgrass then scored a brace, as he continues his impressive loan spell at Villa Park.

Birkir Bjarnason and Conor Hourihane also got their names on the score sheet for Steve Bruce’s side, encapsulating a terrific few days for Villa after they beat Middlesbrough 1-0 on December 30.

Hendrie, who played for Villa for 13 years between 1994 and 2007, described the win on his personal Twitter account as “unreal” and stated that Bruce’s men boast the kind of quality capable of beating a side in the promotion places.

After a winless run of five matches prior to the two victories over Middlesbrough and Bristol City, Villa now find themselves back in the Championship’s top six places – leapfrogging Leeds United after the Whites drew against Nottingham Forest.

Bruce now has the chance to rest his first-team stars as they face League One side Peterborough in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, before Villa return to Championship action against Nottingham Forest on January 13.
